Seller claims it's as it was when brought back by his grandfather.
Never touched cleaned or taken apart.
Supposedly only drawn by grampa when telling about then :-)
Will see if i can knock it down a little and think i'll buy as the knife looks near mint and untouched as he claims
Thanks for everything and i'll get back with better pics if/when i buy it.
I've read alot about paint, all i could find, and as it is an early piece, i think my suspicion about a bad paintjob and/or storage conditions later on are spot on.
found this:
The only difference is the black paint that can vary in workmanship from looking like it was done with an old rag to a professional paint job, having the base sanded down and repainted. One point I should make is this, which is at the time spray painting was not a method used. The scabbards were dipped in a vat of black paint and polished out. So run marks on period-repainted scabbards can be found. Plus one can also throw into the mix that the paint was lead based so it chips when aged as well as crazing "small cracks in the finish." If the scabbard was pained with a paintbrush there can be brush lines too! Depending on the storage of the dagger, the paint can show the above problems and others like white oxidization, and rust. Just to name a few.
NSKK standard
anyone with paint experience inhere?
Hi Dave, I can agree with the comment you have quoted.
As a general rule, if you look at a factory painted NSKK dagger scabbard, it woud look just like a painted SS dagger scabbard in finish.
You are going to take the plunge and buy it?
Cheers, Ade.
Will see if i can get postage included in the askingprice :-)
worth about 12
The dagger, as more or less confirmed in here, looks really good, early and like it has'nt been "cleaned" so yes i'll go for it, even without the discount but i have to try.
Will be back with better pics
Bought it and recieved it
Looks as expected..totally tight and extremely well fitting in all parts/radi.
I'll bet this has'nt been apart.
Blade has oc got the usual marks from being drawn (too often) but still a nice crossgrain and wonderfull etch...suspect it at some point has been displayed as etch is much darker on makersmark.
A real beauty imo
looks like a nice early dagger,,,go for it!
Hi Dave, how does the paint look now you have it in hand?
Cheers, Ade.
The paint looks exactly as described in the link i posted
"spidery" with 2 small chips in the paint and a tiny little bit of whiteish oxidizion.
Overall a beautifull patina :-)
Will post better pics when adding my sa/nskk's to the database
