Hi Chuck it's origional but! looks like blade has been badly rusted at some time and then had the rust buffed off it,

It's a good dagger for sure but I would like to see the dagger fully in the scabbard and put in the right way to confirm the fit. That is a $300-$400 SA and a really great starter SA, very early and it looks overall (excepting the blade condition) in great shape. I never store my SA or SS dagger in the scabbard once I purchase them as that is what happens to a blade that has moisture on it and in the scabbard. There is no way to make the blade look better. I would leave it just like you found it and put Ren wax on the whole thing, wood grip and the scabbard as well.
