If you take a small enough magnet then it wont be necesarry, you can test them without taking the fittings off.

I also have a question why are the SA, SS and NSKK daggers basically the same, why wouldnt the SS have something different then the SA? - Nick K
This is a good question Nick and as Ade has pointed out the SS was sub-servant to the SA during that time. The was a struggle for power going on at that time and IMO a separately looking SS dagger was the last thing on their mind. When the SS came to full power after the Rohm Purge that organiation was now above the SS and for the officers they had a chained version,, that was some still in the same likeness of the SA dagger. A prototype SS was created but never made it to production as this was t the end of the war.
Could some post a Chained SS dagger for me as an example as I am overseas right now and I do not have the capabilities with the system I am using here to cut and paste. sorry about that. Great postings Regards Larry

Larry is correct - According to some sources, there was a single prototype developed
that was unique from earlier SS, SA and NSKK daggers. Intended to replace the
1936 SS model, it was crafted by the 'Peter Krebs' Company in 1940, but
never went beyond this one trial piece. ( Artist concept below )

Personally, I love the original version - styled after 16th century
    Swiss hunting daggers.........
