Chain Dagger of SS General, Brigadefuhrer Georg Altner."

There are 300 pages plus, in the file at National Archives on this SS General. It is one of the highest ranking SS attributed daggers, that has ever been discovered. Altner put the gun to his head in Dortmund park, April 12, 1945. At the time he was head of the Kripo in this district, his last assignment.

Kripo General ?? Im Chilled ! Im impressed by the effort of the general..who placed his matching SS number in 2 places. This dagger is in great condition including the remaining link burnishing..with some minor bruising. Shows usage and with usage this guy got around alot..meeting some high level people including Himmler with his 4 digit numbers. Impressive. Regards Larry

The downfall of the Type III or what ever collectors wish to term the "septum" chains, is that the pebbling in the back ground of the links, was not all that well pronounced. This is the reason Lar, that these Type III's, didn't retain the burnishing that you normally see with later style chains. And most likely the reason that this particular chain was discontinued, shortly after its inception. As you've mentioned, the chain and burnishing on the Altner dagger, is something else. Especially to have stood up in condition that you see it here.

Well, the SS number explains the provenance to Brigadefuhrer Georg Altner. Did the vet give you any information as to where he found it?

Very nice piece. You can find this kind of motto only on a few A-typed cained daggers. Most of the A-typed chained daggers have the same kind of motto as the B 1.
