For the SS forum I merged a few posts together within 1 thread to give abetter view on the differences in the 4 chain types seen on the Chained SS hanger assembly. This topic is quite confusing but thankfully for Ned ..Adrian Stevenson..Billy G and Frog Prinz..they have described the differences between the 4 types. Regards Larry

The photos below are courtesy of Member "Eisenschwein" who shares with us a Type II beveled Wotans knot connectors with a Type B1 Chain and scabbard center ramp assembly.

Out of the 4 Chain Variants are noted as:

Types A , B1 and B2 are equipped with the beveled Wotans Knot connectors

Type A - Nickel fittings with septum in the nasal cavity - Initial Production period
Type B1- Nickel fittings ( No septum ) - Mid period production
Type B2- Nickel plated ( No Septum ) - Mid to late period production

    Type C - Equipped with Type I Wotans Knot connectors ( Un-beveled ) - Late period production

Default Chained SS Study of the 4 Chain types

Larry asked me to show you an early nickel chained M 36, which was found as a part of a SS-grouping during a house clearance in Germany (you can find the initial thread in SS uniforms and insignia, Early Allgemeine SS Tunic). The dagger is in as found condition and untouched. All screws have never been touched. It's a typical early nickel-silver M 36 with painted scabbard and one screw at the center mount. The chain itself is a as we call it a B 1 initial production, without septum in the skull.

    Regards

    Stefan

Default Chained SS Study of the 4 Chain types

Discovered less than a year ago, this is the Chain Dagger of SS General, Brigadefuhrer Georg Altner. The dagger was veteran acquired last fall. This fantastic SS edged weapon displays not only characteristics that draw a time line for the production of the M36 Chain Daggers, but it also shows that it was in fact one of the first SS chains ever to be manufactured. I've intended to write this up on our website in the blog section, I just can't find the time to do so.

This Wotan's Knot assembly on a very early "type 2" chain set has a pin or rivett connection to the snap clip. Perhaps an early production step/cost that was soon eliminated ?
