Hmm, interesting, there is someone in Germany who can help, the Imperial War Museum did give me their details, but I appear to have lost them. I'll have to get in contact with the IWM again.
Am I correct in identifying it as a 1936 model NCO issue Degen?

You could have SS number 143 researched, but this will cost you as a researcher would have to go through the files held in the USA.
I can highly recommend:
Westmoreland Research
But as I said , it is not proven that it is a serial number.
Cheers, Ade.

Hey, the scabbard and the blade would be nice.
What is the plan for it? Are you selling or keeping,
thankyou matty

Photos coming up. depending on its value (i.e. if the value is low I keep it) it's for sale. Obviously it would be prudent of me to fully investigate the significance of the number on the blade first.

Would a sympathetic restoration be a viable project?
Hello and welcome to the forum!
A light cleaning would not hurt at all. Even if it is only with a dry soft cloth.
Looking forward to more photos.
Ralph.
