    Hello everybody, im new!

Ive had a good read and youve all have some great views and answers so maybe you can help me?

I have an SS dagger which on close inspection the wooden part looked like it was pushing past the edge of the crossguard so I slackened the nut.
Now the real question is, ive seen cracked handles about and is this what happens to them if you do not loosen the nut?
Should slackening the nut just be something done as a matter of principle on all SS/SA dagger handles?

    Any views always welcome.

    Matt

Hey Matt, you will find endless threads about maintaining blades and such.
My personal approach is NOT to touch the nut.
From a value perspective an unturned nut is ALWAYS preferred by collectors.
These things are pretty much stabilized now after 75 years.
The big thing is to keep these away from the sun and variations in heat and humidity.
Do not keep these in a damp basement.
In my experience more damage has been done over the years by people trying to clean and preserve these things than people leaving them alone.
    Good luck in the hobby!

Very good advice IMO, and I have a number of images where either over tightening (or force fitting) has damaged a number of especially SS dagger grips for the wood types (of grips), and fractured the plastic types for the daggers that used them. Not that I think that the SS types are more prone to being broken/damaged all by themselves if left alone, because with age wood tends to shrink, and likewise is minimally affected lengthwise by atmospheric conditions.
