Thanks for the comments guys, and the hefty price tag of $160 USD is something I can handle. Can either of you or anyone else say who is a good person to trust if I do go that route? Also what does something like that cost? This is my first ever dagger purchase and I love SS stuff. I have not decided for sure on restoration though.

I would say its best to just leave it alone other than oiling and cleaning off the dirt. I would just clean the dirt off detergent with in reason. you could remove the rust chemically. could even go farther, but then it will lose its battle field look.......

These are 'Dress' daggers, and they were never worn on the battlefield..........

I know someone here who recently had some grip restoration work done
on an SS dagger. I'll PM you Jeff, when I find out who the repairman is.

These daggers cost in the region of $2000 to $3500 today, in good
original condition. When the grip is 'restored' it may be worth
somewhere in the $800 to $1500 range, IMO............

    yes............

perhaps I should have used another word or words. like recovered relic,or battlefield dig up. whoops there I go again! perhaps a dump site recovery?

Hmmn.........what do you call it then?

    yeah........very desireable blade!

A young lad could have gotten hold of it and played 'Paul Bunyan' on the
wood pile for a half hour and wrecked it as well !

I've done similar things with a British '07 bayonet and scabbard as a tad.
One kid gets the scabbard, the other the bayonet,
then a fencing match begins -
The scabbard always gets pieces gouged out of it..................... !

I know of an old friend who told me that in the early 70's, he and a
pal destroyed an SS dagger and an SA dagger in an afternoon
    - by using them as 'throwing knives' against trees and
digging in the dirt with them. This was well before
    I met the guy !

They are quite fragile really, not meant for 'serious' use.

All of you will get a kick out of this. Here is the elusive ultra rare SS scabbard that I was afraid to post. I dont want people tracking me down so they can come steal this wonderfull piece!

    Jeff

    PS:

I will be posting the updated photos of what the dagger looks like now that I have contained the rust and helped out the grip a bit.
