From the looks of it, I would say that the upper guard was the bit replaced, as the bottom guard seems to fit fine. The pummel nut does not look damaged, though, so whoever did the replacing must have either been very careful or they used the proper wrench. The possibility too, it could have been a period repair? Either way, it's a shame, as the rest of it looks decent.
