Im currently removing czech (?) paint from an M42 with acetone too and I got period paint although there is also a few bits of white paint (snow camo?). I will check if there's a color like yours, it's very interesting. I still have to finnish removing paint from the inside.

    Hi Melf.
Strip slowly and start a separate thread with pictures.
I am inexperienced and I know how exciting it feels to
uncover another layer on a helmet.
I hope to see your results.

Thanks for checking it out Luis.
No it had a modern liner with big domed split pins.
I would not remove an original.
The dome inside looks Slate grey?
Its not the same colour as the outside.
    Thanks again for your interest.
The interior looks just like bare metal to me. Not paint.
"Please", Thank You" and proper manners appreciated

I had one once and stripped a small part and it was bare metal, from there I left it alone!

Acetone revealed what seems to me to be a thin dark grey paint coat or dip that I can see and feel in hand but is hard to photograph.
I am adding pictures to try and show areas inside the skirt which l hope show interior paint, wear marks back to bare metal, and light coloured overpaint from the exterior.
Hope the pictures are helpful, sorry I had problems trying to post here yesterday.
    Thanks for the comments!

Hello, this is my czech used EF 64 M42 helmet after black paint removal (EDIT: just saw you told me to post in a new thread, I'm sorry)

I used tape to remove paint bits first (paint was already chipped so it wasn't difficult) and then finnished with nail polish remover/acetone. I'm happy with the results, it looks much better now imo.

It was very rusty on some parts but it still has grey paint left and also remains of white paint on the outside and on inner edge. I didn't find any other color besides grey, white and black:

The inside's paint is more abundant and in better condition. As you can see the white paint remains on the inside only covers the "skirt", so it might have been painted while a liner was present, I have seen WW2 examples painted like that.
