Hi, This one is an M16 Austrian shell, not an M18, as you can see the rivets over the wearer's ears, to which the chin strap bales would originally have been attached. The remnants of the decal look good, but the green paint appears to have been applied after the pitting developed as there is green paint in the pits. A real Austrian M16 shell, with remnants of what I believe to be a real Heer decal, but I am not sure that the final coat of green is period. Jim G.
Thanks Jim-
Just getting familiar with the early helmets-
Actually pleased its a M16. The green paint has drips inside- Thought the same thing. Wondering how the decal was spared?
They probably painted around the decal.i can't see any green inside the shield. I noticed the high rivets at first as well, thought it was the Austrian, which is good IMO. One on my list, actually.
Austrian ww1 helmet originally with high rivet as stated reissue to German Army ww2 I am also not sure about the brighter green paint. It may just be the lighting. Decal looks honest timothy
