    At the most, wipe it off with a damp rag. Steel wool and oil will remove 70 plus years of patina and ruin the shell in my opinion.

    I’d leave it as is nothing wrong with a good honest used M42 helmet even with the gunk it collected surviving 70+ years.

    It's your helmet. If it were mine, i would just wipe off the "new" dirt and leave it alone.
