Given that the "white" is all the way into the dome of the helmet, I highly doubt it is the remnants of winter white wash.
Yes, 397 is the batch, but I think we are missing some #'s and/or letters. I would guess a "T" or "DN".
Look at Franks "Lot # " database. It does not include EVERY lot number but is still a great tool

I see another german helmet on the shelf in the background that looks in good condition.

Yeah, this thrift shop had several different German helmets (some repros) but also had a German white wash medic helmet, but of course all these helmets were in and around the hundreds. They were probably good prices, but currently a little much for my blood. And they even had a few m1 pots for around $100.
But where my interest lies are the cheaper helmets that may not be highly sought after but have cool history.

That's correct. "Lot number" is the more prevalent term, but same thing.
