But my fear is that the pieces on the right hand side where the Battle dammage is it will break off....

Put it on a shelf and try not to handle it often as this will flake further rusted metal off.

once the majority of the rust is gone you should coat it with paraffin wax or very viscous oil, this will keep it in stu.

I would not do either of these two recommendations. They will attract and hold dust.

Honestly, all that is needed is to keep the helmet is a stable dry environment.

Ade, do you not like the idea of matt varnish?, i have found it very useful on totally rusted relics, holds it all together and stops any further corrosion...

I am very consertvative when it comes to doing anything to an item changing it from how it originally was. Museums work to these principles and I think that we, as mere custodians of these historic items for future generations, should do the same.

Personally, I would not varnish or lacquer an item.

Totally agree with Ade , if it's a relic leave it as a relic , once you have messed with it it is longer the original piece that you found or bought.
