This is where the liner pin goes. Do you not see the identical hole at the back? The hole on the left is either rusted shut or the liner pin is rusted in place. If your helmets had liners you would see this.
Also a bullet hole will not be a perfectly machined round hole and bullet damage to a helmet will cause the metal around the hole to be dented toward the direction of travel of the bullet and cause damage to the shell not a perfect hole.
Sometimes with our helmets we like to let our imaginations to run wild and we miss the obvious! ;-) For all we know our beloved helmet was worn by the company Ferrier who spent most of his time shoeing horses 5 miles behind the front and not in the front line of combat but it's nice to imagine.
