Well.. i will try one more time.
U could use wd-40, it's a lubricant but it also stops rust eating your helmet. It's not that aggressive as some acids or electrolyses.
Next time think twice before buying such a helmet. It's a nice helmet but it's a fragile beauty that needs to be handled with care.

Do nothing to it.

The problem is, this has sat in the ground for 60 odd years. It now has to get used to being in a new envoiroment in a centrally heated home. Rust will continue to flake off for some time. You can dust it off with a soft dry paintbrush every so often, do this outdoors, as Mum's don't like rusty bits all over the house!

To keep things intact, don't handle it too much.

Glas or plexi can come in handy.
Glas bell-jars.
They come in different forms.

Those tools are rather hard to find....

Been away in the Ardennes for a while so missed this , you could use a clear flat spray sealer, this will secure the helmet to some degree, stop rust from flaking off , preserve what decal there is, because it dries flat or matt , if you prefer, there will be no colour change

thanks for all the replies!! I knew when i bought there wouldn't be much i could do with it but wanted to try my chances anyway! So if you guys think it is alright i will leave my helmet alone except for the decal and put clear sealer only on that bit to preserve the decal.
Tell me how it sounds?

Hi Stefan, the decal has survived all these years perfectly OK...honestly it needs nothing done to it. Any kind of sealant will trap moisture in place and make matters worse. PLEASE leave well alone.

Very nice lid, i like it a lot, i got two myself.
The previous posts have said it all, just keep the helmet in a warm and dry place, that will enough to preserve the shell and decal.

they do make some state of the art coatings,like POR15 that will stop rust dead in its tracks. Its absolutely amazing stuff. I have used it for restoring old cars. not only will prevent any further rust, it will strengthen the weak metal quite a bit. gotta wear gloves when you use this stuff!
