    Default Question about relic helmets

I love cheap, rusty, old relics! Something about battlefield finds attracts me. I guess it's from my roots collecting US Civil War relics. I know guys have mentioned sprays to preserve them. One member said something about fish oil spray. Anybody have info on what the best product is? Here are some of my newest...

    Wow! Great lids!

They sure look fragile. Some will say just to leave them alone but if it were me, i'd be looking for some of that non-smelling fish oil stuff that member Qotd swears by. Don't use WD40 as it attracts dust and some say, moisture also. Plus it smells...

Thanks, Glenn! I can always count on you when I post!

I really do like the relics. I have some pretty nice helmets too. Nothing to brag about compared to some of the collections here. These examples posted still retain a decent amount of original paint and ghost decals. The rust coming off them isn't too bad. I have all 4 seasons where I live, and want to preserve them.

I have used vegetable oil before. Doesn't smell really and It doesn't have the glossy glow to the lid. Does keep the surface rust from starting though.

Here are my 2 I just got in. First is from latvia, dug from the kurland front. SD M40 Whermacht lid, with winter white wash and got just alittle of the heer decal left:

Second is a Small size M40 from Normandie. Was found near Utah beach in the 80's. Still has remnants of the liner inside. No decal though had dark green over apple green but the looks of it:

Love relic's, though it the prices are starting to get up there now!

I love relic helmets! with mine I cleaned it it warm soapy water to remove unwanted dirt and dried it with a hairdryer, then covered the entire thing in oil. I don't know if it's what I should have done but i dont want it rusting away to nothing.
