I'm going to try and get this relic back to some sort of decent condition.

Always wanted to restore a German helmet back to as near to it's younger life as possible

Pictures of M40 helmet in not a really bad state.. the paint isn't original to the helmet.

Did German helmets have a undercoat?

Three pins and washers found and now added.

Is it down to the air hole/vents? it's not the grommet type, seems to be molded on the helmet??

What size liner for a 64" shell?

    Nah that's an M40, A Size 64 shell takes a 56 or 57 if i remember right!....

I also advise that you avoid bending the liner-rivets too often or they'll snap off....an original liner will generally cost around $100-$120 on the Online Market...I enjoy restoring Helmets as well, btw...
Good Luck with your restoration project - Looking forward to photos...
    cheers, Glenn

The 4th pic from OP...the interior when I zoomed to 200X looks like an insert typical of an M35. But I have been wrong many times before.

Yes...Mr. Gunny is correct...56-57 liner is needed on a 64 shell.

Like to see a couple pics of the inside of vent hole. Still say it's an M35.

I cleaned up the pic of the vent hole best I could. Still look like an M40 ?

    Looks like an M40!...

Edit, looks like an M35 after all, the vent has corroded to the shell. I bow to your better eye Real Steel!..
