Just got this M40 shell the past week out of southwestern Serbia.

Although small in size (62) and so rusted inside there are no
markings visible, there seems to be a trace of paint on the surface.
I liked the looks of it and went for it ! !

Wondered what everyone thought of these "relic" type helmets...........

Nice lid! Looks like a solid shell. IMO I think relic lids are a great and cheaper way to collect helmets. At least for the majority of the ones you see you don't have to worry about them being altered by someone. So for someone thats new to collecting helmets I think its a great way to start.

    Thanks, guys.....

It is actually very solid - mostly surface rust.

Trta, there must be certain features you see that define it as Quist.
I wouldn't have known, although I did hold it up against a ET62
and noticed slightly different rim profiles.

These are much more affordable to me than pristeen ones ! !

When I was 14, in 1969, I was in the Serbian area of what was then Yugoslavia, and in the small town of Prizren (spelling?) I found an M40 SD SS relic (one of 2 relics in my collection - the other an Italian pot that I found in a chicken coop in my grandfather's mountain village in southern Greece on the same trip). There was a significant SS presence in that area of Yugoslavia during the War, engaged principlely in anti-partisan operations I believe. From the photographs, I don't think that there is a decal on the left side of your pot, but the right side shot is a little blurry. Look hard at the area, and hopefully you will find traces of a decal there! Good luck. Jim Geanuracos

I like that one. Not too rusty and with some original paint too.

    Cheers, Ade.

Well a long time collecting German helmets, Quist my favorite so I see it immediately, and Q M40 has a unique air vents and soft outer edge! All Q helmets I had happiness to find in my area were the SD SS or double decal police! Here's a little help for you, but in reality it is not easy to use this table for identification!
