    I found 5 or 7 lids like this as well. ( cant remember how many) Some of mine had wire on them. I sold them to a friend of mine for petrol money.

    Once the gritty residue had been removed from the leather and a little neatsfoot oil applied everything relaxed back to the original form.....

    Good job cleaning this one up mate , the North East forests of Europe and Northern Russia whcih are notoriously swampy combined with the vegetation of the Primevel forests combine to produce a blue clay whcih means that many metals do not rust , hence you will see that most of the Helmets etc that are in good condition come from the areas around Leningrad , Narva or the Artic Tundra of Karelia.

    Most of the really examples from this website and others were all found in those areas !!

    Saturated conditions are superb for preservation. Here and in Ireland 2000 plus year old corpses are from time to time found in the peat bogs, the condition of which is often remarkably well preserved.

    what a superb transformation after cleaning ,so much of its originality has been retained ,well done on a very nice find and for the before and after pictures just fascinating
