    Hello Karen,
    This looks to be an original WW II Japanese officer's sword.
    This might help you to get a translation of what is on the tang.

    Chikugo jū Morimitsu kore [wo] Saku
    Morimitsu, residing in Chikugo, made this

    昭和二十年五月
    Shōwa nijū-nen go-gatsu
    May 1945

    Quite possibly this Morimitsu.

    Ninth smith from the bottom of p. 397.

    Interesting to see a 1945 dated blade mounted in the earlier pattern IJA mounts. At this late a date it is doubtful that the owner ever saw any combat.

    The problem here is that it looks to be a marriage of an officers Shin-Gunto with an NCO's scabbard. It will all depend on the condition of the blade, which can only be judged in the hand.
