Besides the recipient, I count 8 others (about half the total signatures) with the surname Tanaka ... likely family.

Pardon my repeat posts. I was trying to add a Sign off Signature...... and couldn't figure out how to Delete it after my blunder. Still pretty new here and haven't been by in a while.

    Guy,
Do I have it correct that the owners name would be Ki Bu'un Chōkyū ?
My Daughter in law said that at her "Mothers is a long sword and a short one with the thingies they go in"
I look forward to seeing/sharing those but at the current time they aren't speaking. Her Mother is trying to deal with Mental/Dementia issues. My fingers are crossed that they are safely stored away.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Fellow Member AZPhil led me over here last year. He was correct that it's a great bunch of members!!

I just came across a friends post on a M1 Carbine forum of a Japanese WWII helmet with writing on it. I'll try to post it when I can.

    Again Thank You Sir..

    Cheers,

Interesting that the main slogan is written in the postwar direction (backwards by pre-war standards)

No; I'll repost with some notes to clarify:

    武運長久
    Ki Bu'un Chōkyū
This is a war-time slogan meaning: "Wishes/Prayers for Continued Luck in the Fortunes of War."

    田中純一
    Tanaka Jun'ichi-kun
The recipient of the flag -- whose body it likely was taken from -- was Mr. Tanaka Jun'ichi. Tanaka is the surname. The suffix "~kun" is similar to "Mr.", but it shows that he was a peer or social subordinate to whomever presented the flag. A more polite version (I'm certain you've heard" is さん
"~san"; and even more polite is "~sama."
