Also, as to paint on the fittings, all I can see is a green on the metal. It isn't paint looks more like old age.

Happy to admit i was wrong, it is indeed a type 98 Shin-Guntō. It dose appear to me that the saya has been repainted at some point and whoever did it also painted over the fittings. A bit of careful work with paint thinners would clear that off. Got any choji oil for the blade?

Choji oil? I don't think so... What might be a fair value on something like this? My mom may have me put it on Ebay. Sure appreciate everyones help.
With a little work it could be worth between $800 and $1000. Keep in mind it has a replacement Kabuto-gane , the saya has been repainted and its a factory made blade.

Did not realize these markings were on the other side of sword. Can anyone translate?
I would suggest not putting it on ebay. You would be better off selling it on the forum or to a collector who will appreciate it and not paying the ebay fees and having to abide by their rules.
I'm sure there are people here who can advise the correct outlet to sell it for the best money and to the best person.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
The kanji are not easy to read as your picture is not clear. However, it is a date and appears to be Showa 17, which is 1942. I can not read the month as it is too dark.
