Here's a flag from my collection that was brought home, or sent home by a Kiwi veteran. The vet was with 'A' Company, 35th Battalion, 2nd NZEF. The flag was taken on Nissan Island, which is part of the Green Islands group, in February 1944.

This flag is a little un-usual because the vet has outlined the kanji with an ink pen.

The vet also wrote his details, and where and when the flag was taken.

The best part about this item is this photo of the vet holding it. The Kiwi vet is on the right. On the left is an American vet. I have both names of these guys. The Nissan Island operation was a joint Kiwi/American venture.

    Hi Russ, nice item!

Have you had any of it translated?

I am sure the members here would give you an idea of what it says.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Hi Ade

    Many thanks for your comments!

Yes, not fully translated as such but Nick offered the following key information several years ago:

"The owner of the flag appears to have been a civil servant assigned to a remote government outpost office in the southern tip of Taiwan, who got drafted and received this flag from his colleagues at the office there."

I have several other items that the kiwi vet brought back, or sent home.

I will add these to this thread as time permits.

    Regards

What a superb grouping! I especially like the photo-it gives it "solidity"! A Civil Servant? Wow...I wonder who he annoyed to get sent into combat on a remote island only to, likely get the chop himself.

Many thanks gents for your fine comments on this flag - much appreciated!

Keeping with the flag for a moment, here's a pic of some medical equipment sitting on top of the flag, which appears to be upside down.

More items from the group, including this, which the vet has written on.

And the contents of his letter home.

Also, this neat photograph of a vet wearing what looks to be a winter navy petty officer cap. Must be a great celebration!

Another piece of paperwork. After some clever detective work, Nick managed to identify the tally as from the cruiser Aoba.

    And the reverse...

That's about it for the Nissan grouping - hope you enjoyed some of my most treasured items!
