    絵手紙 e-tegami [picture letter] is still a popular hobby in Japan. Well, I don’t know if “popular” is the correct word ... but it’ still done today.

    Do a google image search of the kanji, you’ll see what I mean.

    I’m on this acursed iPhone and don’t know to attach the URL when it doesn’t appear on the phone. Besides I touch type and have a hell’uva time “hunt-n-pecking.”

    This is a very fine hobby, I like it ! Thank you for learning me it's name.

    Thanks to your help I have found this interesting blog. This time the letters didn't came from home to the field, but from a soldier in the field, to Japan. Je ended on Okinawa. You can check his story and work here :

    Itō Hanji was apprenticed as a lantern maker at age 19 and married the lantern master's daughter; he also studied Japanese painting. In 1940, age 27, he was conscripted and went into the artillery. He was dispatched to Manchuria; later, KIA in the Battle of Okinawa, 1944.
