This was tough, so my wife helped. What I thought was a hugh single old-style kanji for "Toyo" [Toyozaki] infact was three kanji! Total on the cover is four kanji: Miya-hokō-Zaki

    宮崎
    補工

It looks like this on your cover:

I see it now!!! It looks like "Miyazaki" was written on top of 二補工. So that's what it means!?

    Yes, Guy-san.

? 二補工 宮崎 (? Ni Hokou Miyazaki) - 2nd Reserve Engineer, Miyazaki.

Too bad I can't see the first character it has a イ on the left side.

    Cheers!

Canteens with compasses on caps are private purchase usually by army officer's. never seen or heard of them used by navy. These were also sold to campers, hikers, students etc so no way to be certain who owned it.

I think it is for civilian use. I have never seen a pic or even read a reference to blue covers.
I just wonder with raw material shortages, how many canteens were being made for civil use?

The compass could indicate military or even a hiker as stated....but the canteen does have an officers look to it. Also the kanji on the caps, never seen that on military.

    The search continues
