Here are some stills from the 1939 film 「上海陸戦隊」 "Shanghai Naval Landing Forces" showing the Bergman SMG ammo bag in use. This film has many great scenes featuring NLF uniforms, small arms and field gear. As you can see from the photos, unlike the traditional Japanese navy method of having the haversack on the left side and the canteen on the right side, for SMG troops the ammo bag took the place of the haversack, so the haversack was moved to the right side with the canteen placed on top similar to the army fashion. I've also attached a Japanese replica of the Bergman ammo bag that was made based off period photos.
