thanks guys, your knowledge is impressive!! were these generally given to infantry soldiers? if so maybe the 15th imperial division as based near or in Kyoto. The family member who the flag belonged to was based in Burma, however he also mentioned that he had swapped a lot of "war trophies" with American Gis during the war so it might well of come from the Americans rather than the British troops based in Burma?
Both 15th and 16th divisions were drawn from Kyoto. There are no hints to narrow things down, so your guess is as good as mine. Anyone going to war got these flags, army as well as navy.
