Regarding the author of the card, the Iwo Jima Association records casualties of the 9th Battalion as 238 with 0 survivors.

I have always had issues with how to most accurately translate that unit kanji: 速射砲
I have viewed these units as anti-tank units, so would the reading of this kanji be closer to that of "high velocity" artillery, i.e. punching through tank armor, or is it speaking more to the cyclical nature of loading the gun, in essence throwing lots of rounds down range in little time?

速射砲 was an antitank gun. Called a rapid firing gun, because it only took 40 to 80 seconds to fire it upon sighting a tank. They also boasted a high rate of fire against stationary targets which could reach 20 rounds/minute. The Type 1 47mm anti-tank gun is a typical example

Rounds could penetrate armour plating of 3.7 cm thickness at a range of 1300 meters, but the M4 Sherman had max armour of 7.5 cm and minimum of 2.5 cm, so you really had to be lucky with the location of the hit to incapacitate a M4 with the gun. In the Battle of Okinawa, barely 5 Shermans out of 30 could be knocked out by the 47mm anti-tank gun. But even that was only possible by drawing the tanks within a range of 300 meters, which fully exposed the gun crew.

The Type 1 was designed to be drawn by trucks and other vehicles to make it a mobile gun, for which Independent Rapid Firing Gun Battalions were organized, while earlier rapid firing guns used to be limited to infantry units.
