Hi everyone, I have two Japanese messtins, both like the one shown are painted brown with black paint over the top. The ones shown in text books are not black over-painted, so does anyone know if this is a wartime practice or postwar alteration? Many thanks, Douglas

Is it overpaint, or is it turning black from being over a fire. I have seen this brownish color turn black on other examples. Usually near the bottom of the tin.

Looks almost shinny on the pic. Still a very nice tin. Wait till Taka-San has a look.

    Hi Douglas-san,

They were simply used for cooking, just carbon.

They were shiny originally, than gradually gets dull and darker.

    I see:
    昭十十
    口 号

Or, as it is on the tin:

    口 昭
    .... 十
    号...十

Would this be Shouwa 20? Or am I missing something else [don't ask my wife!]

    Hi Guy-san,

The date 1942 is written 十七 (Shou Jyuu-shichi) - Showa 17
