大 Ō/dai "large/big" might refer to a surname, or perhaps a location ... like a battalion 大隊 Dai-tai ??

Thanks again, Guy. I assumed the "large" symbol indicated the helmet size. Thanks for translating. Still a mystery, what it really means.
