The build-up of rust over time is one of the ways to guessing the age of a blade. Cleaning the nakago totally removes that capability and resets, so to speak, the age to "today." I will be honest and say that I have cleaned a couple of mine, but I took good photos of the nakago before doing it. I never plan to sell mine, and I don't own any that could be of great financial value. One of those I cleaned was my dad's Mantetsu, then i had it polished, but it comes dated already.
Thanks Geoff it was in my hand and no where near the concrete
