....So do the slightly more in focus kanji in the second photo support what you thought originally?
The only problem I had with the original photo -- after rotating the image -- was trying to read through the rust covering the first kanji ... but I could discern the "radical" and the and kanji ... so it was just a matter of seeing which old province names had the radical, and amongst those, which had "chu" as the second part of the name, then see if the "shape" of that kanji matched yours. The rest was just some detective work.

Hope someone can confirm which of the Tameie [say: tahmay- eeyay] smiths likely produced your wakizashi.

    Cheers!

Well thank you so much for your help, it really is hugely appreciated! Do you have any idea how much a sword like this may be worth?

Sorry, Paul, I don't; I'm not a collector and am not aware of prices.

Well thanks all the same! I still can't believe it's as old as it is, it's the same age as my house.

As Japanese swords are hand made and each an individual work, it is impossible to estimate a value without a hands on examination. This would not be considered old in Japan as they have been forging swords in this manner for over 1000 years.

I don't suppose anyone knows of any specialists in North West England who could take a look at this? I've had a Google round but can only find general antique dealers or shops in the South East.

Not looking to sell it, but I'd love to know more about this sword and what I should be insuring it for!

Thanks everyone. I've given the armouries an email (great suggestion, thank you), I'm over in Leeds all the time, no idea why I didn't think of them!
