Article about: I just picked up this cased Order of the Rising Sun 7th class medal. It will be a nice companion piece with my 8th class. I'm really digging collecting Japanese awards!

The citation is dated April 29th 1940 for the China Incident, when Army Sergeant Oda won the 7th class Golden Kite and the Rising Sun 7th class. However, the Rising Sun and case are both postwar pieces though original. So they were put together recently. Note that the box has a spring-loaded lid and the medal has no enamel finish on the rear side, which are clear signs of post war vintage.
The citation also mentions that SGT Oda's award comes with a bonus of ¥1,300.00. That sum, according to this calculator says the buying power was roughly equivalent to $3,750 in 2015:
What is the equivalent of 1300 Japanese yen [1877-2015] in year 1940 in the currency of US dollar [1791-2015] in year 2015?

1300 Japanese yen [1877-2015] in year 1940 could buy the same amount of consumer goods and services in Sweden as 3749.9028017595747 US dollar [1791-2015] could buy in Sweden in year 2015. This comparison should be used if the purpose of the analysis is to compare absolute worth over time rather than relative worth.

Another way to compare the worth of money in different periods is to estimate how much labour power an amount of money could buy. 1300 Japanese yen [1877-2015] in year 1940 was the amount a male worker in Sweden received in wage for 880.8017277882966 hours work. A male worker in Sweden in 2015 received 21844.535669608333 US dollar [1791-2015] in wage for 880.8017277882966 hours worked. This comparison should be used if the purpose of the analysis is to compare relative worth over time rather than absolute worth.

[dunno if the following are good data or not!]
1300 Japanese yen [1877-2015] in year 1940 could buy 267.65126466606023 gram gold. The price of 267.65126466606023 gram gold in year 2015 was 9982.53436697819 US dollar [1791-2015].

1300 Japanese yen [1877-2015] in year 1940 could buy 26700.890163086155 gram silver. The price of 26700.890163086155 gram silver in year 2015 was 13460.551707749588 US dollar [1791-2015].
Perhaps Nick can tell us whether or not this caluclator is close to being accurate.
