You need to learn to take better photos without the reflections. It says In Commemoration of Cavalry Victory and is a discharge from duty cup from the cavalry in Manchuria with a poem about having served his duty for His Majesty and the joy of going home.

Glad I had just swallowed my coffee before I read that...or may well have been down to the electrical appliance assistance store tomorrow!

Look forward to seeing better images of such items in the future...as Nick said, without glare is always best if possible.

It is actually quite easy. You don't need any fancy camera, but one with a macro mode.
Then you use a desk lamp for taking the photo. In the light you just hold the cup so no reflection is there. With a flash you have no control, but this way you have total control. If you want to prevent the photo from turning yellowish, you need to switch the white balance to the desk lamp mode.

That is why you need to use a desk lamp to have full control of how the light reflects. Unlit room with no flash is the same as using a flash, because you don't guide the light the way it should hit the object.
