    "Grass writing" is a cursive script, so called because of its flowing style not unlike tall grass waving in the wind.

    The example below shows regular script, called "kaisho," for the words 草書 sou-sho [literally "grass writing"], followed by the same kanji in "grass writing."


    Here's a short and quick primer explaining three styles of calligraphy .... there are more styles! Although it says "Japanese calligraphy," the styles were borrowed from China.

    I just love this forum. Because of the information gained here I was able to dig deeper on finding the sword smiths real name. He name is Kataoko, Itoshi born April 1, 1895 worked rikugun-Jumel-Tosho died Dec 2, 1965. Marty
