What kind of sword is this?

Article about: My great uncle got this from World War 2. He was in the Japanese Islands. I have no idea what kind it is. There are markings on it and has a wooden handle.

    hi Jeff , this looks to be a naginata blade from what i can make out from the photos , these weapons were mounted on the end of wooden poles back in the day ,

    Looks like an Philippines sword, and looks like an Burmese Banshee sword also, but i could be wrong.

    I would for sure say its an south pacific tribal type sword.

    My thinking too. Not Japanese.
    Strange that it has what looks like a lathe turned handle.
    Most likely a souvenir item........
