Certainly not an officers cap.
Japanese caps usually have three air vents in the material at the top of the crown on each side.
This is not the standard army pattern cap but is instead, I beleive, the type used by the navy. I simply don't know about authenticity, but if I had to guess I would say it was a genuine unissued piece, but these caps are outside my area of knowledge. They generally have an anchor patch stitched to the front. There are a number of similar caps on the collectors guild where you can readily see the differences to the army version, including the cotton chinstrap. The Collector's Guild
It has the Navy issue stamp inside and two sets of eyelets at the rear which is also a navy feature.
Is there any sign of a removed insignia on the front?
Regards
Russ
