Hello
I picked this up recently and I guess its a broken sword tang?
it measures almost 4.5 inches.
What type of sword did this tang belong to?
I have no idea how old.
Thank you very much for your time and help

Nōshū jū Daidō saku
Made by Daidō residing in Nōshū [modern Gifu Prefecture].
He might have been this Daidō who flourished 1661~1673.
Too bad it was destroyed.

From the saw marks on the end, I would say it is from an older blade that has been shortened.

Although pronounced Daimichi by some western collectors, Guys translation of Daido is correct. Some moron cut this nakago off in order to make a hunting knife out of this blade. There were multiple generations of this smith. Many years ago, I saw a bucket full of sawed off nakago such as this one that had been obtained from a knife maker in Colorado. A sad ending for this wakizashi.
