Hi Matt-
This sword is an Imperial Japanese Army officer's machine made blade circa 1943 in the standard shingunto mounting. By 1944, a new mounting was introduced that eliminated all of the brass fittings. This was done due to war shortages. The painted characters on the sword nakago are factory assembly numbers.

That is a nice looking sword BBMATT!!!
Just for my personal knowledge. Mr. Coleman is this a Stainless Steel blade or just a well keep machine made blade?

what kind of skin is on the hilt. It does not look like ray.
I always thought it was hand forged Blade because of slight imperfections and it having a Hamon?

Cool thank you for the information Bob.
If I can further add to Bob's comment, BUT that does not mean that all signed swords of this period are traditional hand forged.by Bob
