WWII knife brought back from Italy?

Article about: Hey Guys. I have a chance to buy this knife. It's a mix match, but what are they? Real? What kind of knife is it? Is it common? How much would be the limit to pay for it?

It's one thing to look at it with your mouth open, but it's better to shoot it gritting your teeth!

There is a similar knife illustrated in a French book - Couteaux de Combat by Jean Fontvielle.

It is marked Acier Fondu (cast steel) and is described as being made in 1915 as part of a batch of 200000 knives converted from butchers and other civilian knives for issue to French troops in the trenches.

The hilt in the book example look identical to yours - with wood grips and brass fittings.

The scabbard on your example looks like it started life as a bayonet scabbard.

Valuation is always difficult. These knives are uncommon - other then the book I have never seen one in more than 30 years of collecting.

I would probably pay about £100 for this providing I was convinced it was authentic.

BTW - I am not saying this one isn't, from what I can tell from the photos it looks OK based on the patination.

    Regards

    Richie

Did a quick Google - it appears Batisse were a French knife making company based in Thiers.
