Within all the years that I have been researching and collecting SA buckles, I have never seen anything like this before. Not that this dismissive comment means anything other than I personally have nothing to hand, other than a subjective opinion.

It is a fascinating and quite exciting buckle.

My opinion is that the steel box has been custom manufactured and is definitely not a conversion from a pre existing buckle. The box is impressively over engineered and especially so by the superb quality of the crimped lugs that hold the roundel in place.

Why is the belt hook catch showing "PATENT"? Is this buckle actually SA der NSDAP?

What is also interesting is that the again beautifully over engineered crimp lugs appear to be capable of only accepting a special type of roundel. The digital images are not the best, however it would seem that the roundel when die stamped was produced with an excessive outer which was then folded and in order to accept the crimp lugs.

No signs of solder plugs to the reverse of the subject roundel and all in all, not the most economical or efficient way to produce a buckle.

So and perhaps, a highly specialised and enigmatic box which is only capable of accepting a highly specialised roundel with the application of a highly specialised, mechanical crimping tool.

Only meandering thoughts chaps as a subjective opinion, without any period reference to substantiate or support.

    Regards and best wishes,

    David

Are you saying that the crimp lugs go under the roundal fold? I've just taken securing lugs off the lid of a can of paint, they are gripping it without actually having to go under the lid at all. Are the crimps capable of gripping the metal without being bent further? I would have thought the body of the buckle could have been die stamped in various stages to form the hole, crimp and fastener fairly easily. If you could get someone to accept the body as standard issue then you could just turn out the centres for the various organisations as required, quite a money spinner.

I am pleased you have seen this David as I know you have collected and specialised in SA for years. For me from what I can see from the pics this is an original buckle, maybe a prototype, early model or whatever it does look very convincing.
