Plated - Crack present
Plated - Crack present
Solid neusilber (Nickel Silver) - Mint with 100% dull silver finish
NO crack present
Plated and marked - Crack absent on the front but starting to appear on the back.
Personnal notes from examination of more than 20 buckles:
- ALL have the exact same post, postsleeve and (typical) prongs.
- One prong is always longer than the other
- Crack seems to be much more frequent on plated examples and/or could be the result of aging die(s). Another option could be too much presure on stamping press since those buckles with crack have a very rounded front.
Dear Jean-Pierre
Thankyou for the additional images and further information in connection with this remarkably interesting thread.
I appreciate and greatly welcome everything that you have said (including showing that remarkable "plated" buckle), however I wonder, does any other early period SS buckle have the "curly and drop elongated top stroke", to the "T" on the motto ? Perhaps it is another distinguishing and unique identification mark to this SS buckle?
Regards,
David

Cracked wing to the left (facing), Overhoff to the right (facing).
Thanks David for the close up .
If one has spare time, he/she could further compare many other parts of an Overhoff SS buckle with a "cracked wing" SS buckle.
He/she will be able to find many, many. differences. Some will be major, some will be minor.
Very interesting thread, proves this site is the best! Wonderful clear pictures and good discussions regarding autheticity issues.
Kind regards from Finland
