I'm sure we have discussed these helmets before where some original wartime photos were shown ??

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

Anders we need to talk about you sending me that helmet. As soon as possible. I'm happy to pay postage
I think that a helmet on the last image, not the original
Well interesting thread! Ive never even seen or heard about one until about 5 minutes ago, very nice! - Nick K
The helmet is not mine, and I think it is sold since long...
The straps is not original was made after the helmet was found, but liner looked ok.
So sorry KradSpam, can't send it to you :-)
Maybe the red colour was to distingish them from other helmets (for example when viewed from the top in a row of helmets).
I dont buy the theory about it being for visibility in water. The helmet would surely be one of the first items to be shed in hard competition with boots or jackets, when an airman ditched in water.

I agree about the helmet not being worn in ditching, but clothing doesnt get shed, remember that the life jackets are over the flight clothes and theres no way you take the life jacket off to get rid of other clothing
