thanks guys. In the end real hot water was enough. it made the wax sort of flued again and I was able to get it off by dibbing it with paper towels.
Helmet's looking fine now! I've seen people heat the wax with hair dryers too and then dab it off with paper towels. Not too tough to do-just takes alot of time, is all. (this works on carpets too, if you should, say, spill candle wax on it)
