Yup it's the age old scam of the seller going on.

Seems the same guy bid multiple times under various user identities, bids high to scare off other "real" bidders, withdraws the bids when he wins, and threatens the seller his helmet is now a fake and worthless unless he gets it cheap.

Turns around and sells it for profit down the road after getting it for a fraction of the bid.

Pretty sad the depths guys will go to buy a stupid helmet, that for all intensive purposes looks made yesterday in the garage.

I agree with that. I noted that the first bidder i***r who bid $50 to get the ball rolling withdrew his bid as well. He has over 6000 feedbacks and ALL his bids in the last 6 months are for militaria. Is it coincidental that the winning bidder who withdrew after the auction ended is 1***r, and another prolific bidder on the helmet was r***i? The similarities in each user I.D. name is rather coincidental don't you think? And besides, there are others there that bear a similar kind of I.D. and feedback score as well.

Here's the list of bids, if it helps anyone get a handle on the scam, all the better:

I still don't like it, I repeat here what I said on GHW2 yesterday.

"From what I see, it looks contrived. There are some places where the wire ghosting looks as if the wire was on the helmet when it was painted and not a reaction between materials. If this is the case, where did the paint go that should be on the wire? At a bare minimum there should be paint on the bottom of the wire if it was added after the paint and was the result of rubbing, it just doesn't look right.

If it is good and has been cleaned that much, it is extremely Fk'ed with. From the pictures it is not worth the risk IMO.

I hope it is good for the buyer's sake, if they are a legitimate collector, but I have serious doubts."

........Add to the mix the usual suspects (bid fixing scammers), I hope one of them gets burned. It would serve them right.
    Regards,
    John

    Ned,
Unfortunately since ebay has gone to the anonymous bid it has encouraged this behavior. Bidder names should be listed IMO. It would be must easier to identify the manipulators and their multiple bidder names.

Lol I know, it was tongue in cheek.
The seller should send a Chinese replica once payment is made.

I'm hardly a TR helmet expert, but I've handled a lot of WW2 objects over the years. The whole assembly seems "off" to me. Several things make me question the age of some of the components, and I see some signs of what could be artificial aging. The shame of this is that this was in all probability a pretty nice piece before being "enhanced".
Also, apropos of nothing, but there are a couple of "disinterested" parties in the thread on that other forum who seem pretty, ah, interested in this being labeled as a good original piece.
I'm new here, but let me tell you guys something. Show me somebody who believes in the idea of the "one looker", and I'll show you somebody who has been duped. When there is this kind of money on the line, there are people who will go to great lengths, including educating themselves, obtaining period materials, learning period methods, practicing and perfecting the art of cheating collectors just...like... you. And me, of course. I was once told that a smart collector begins with the premise that the item he holds is fake. Then, he works to convince himself it isn't. Never talk yourself into a piece; talk yourself out of it, if you can.

An item shouldn't have question marks, this has plenty of them. Trust me I know the pitfalls of camo helmet collecting well.
