I guess I should clarify that HKB is the abbreviation for Heeresküstenartillerie. This was therefore an Army battery, not a Navy one. There were many army and navy batteries interspersed along the Norwegian coast. This caused some confusion, particularly during the commando raid on Vågsø and Måløy in 1941, when Naval signals did not think to inform the Heer coastal battery of the impending raid.

Here is my thread on my shipboard helmets. Not a big sample, frankly. Certainly there are examples of KM helmets in this general coloration, but examples I am finding are rare. This one was whitewashed over, making it lighter grey than it was originally (compare inside color).

Here is a comparison of the color between my marine gloss shipboard M42, which I am guessing is a KM lid based on lot number and location where it was found in Denmark (Langeland, site of a huge Navy complex) and this Army artillery helmet.

I have spent some time with this one tonight, and can confirm it is heavily whitewashed. So it does not really compare well with the marine gloss paint on the M42. Alas, it has the exact same paint color as another helmet I just got in this fall. More on that later.

Here are some revealing shots of the whitewash.

I compared this helmet to my other Heer helmet with gray coloration from Norway (NS 68 M35 DD Heer). Turns out, they are really twins! This is especially interesting since this one has known provenance from a Heer Coastal Battery. Makes me think the minty one was also associated with a battery, but no way to prove it. It is also from Norway, where it came out of a collection recently.

See how the paint inside the helmets matches. You can also see the original color on this whitewashed helmet where it was dissolved by something. Almost a before and after shot. Yes, these helmets were twins at one point. This one was winter camoed, and that explains the light grey paint.

Cool! Just like families-one went Army and the other brother joined the Navy! It's great that you have the pair back together again!

Nice comparisons Scott, I'm not sure if anyone has handled more shipboard grey helmets than you!
