A lot of vets laqured or varnished their souvenir helmets. It is just the story of the helmet as it passes through history. It is a good honest helmet. I would leave it alone.

The helmet is a KM from the lot 100161 by EF, the decal is not a "ca pocher" but a "huber jordan and K" also called "thin wings". I have got the same helmet from the same lot in my collection.

Well if lorient has an helmet same numbers etc what else can it be ,.Just seen another km at river valley militaria same numbers etc 1250 dollars happy days,If it is a KM lid, then yes, it is a bargain, congrats!

That's good news man!
Regarding the laquer, I think you should leave it the way it is. A laquered KM like that is what gives it such a deep gold tone.
