Re: A helmet database and a request for help
Thankyou Pablo,
I DO appreciate the effort - the DIN standard for sheet metal gauges ( Deutsches Institut für Normung ) has metal ranges 1.13mm, 1.25mm, 1.38mm, 1.50mm and 1.75mm. These are the gauges helmets will be found in ( mainly 1.50mm so far ) Unfortunately only calipers can give that level of accuracy.
If you don't have them, the weight and the dimension side to side ( width ) at the outside edge will help establish a pattern - don't especially buy anything, please!
Thanks for all you indulgence so far - I hope I can come up with something meaningful.

Re: A helmet database and a request for help
Hi Dan,
Not sure if it'll help because I can only give you some very minimal data, but just in case:
1. Relic M35 Heer double decal, w/ liner band (and chinstrap loops), maker and size unknown (bubbling and rust obscures the mark), weight: 1066g, dimensions: across bottom 231mm, front-to-back 288mm
2. Relic M40 Heer SD, no liner or bolts, 3 SMALL holes amounting to a combined 3.376cm2 (not sure if that disqualifies it- but if you can correct for liners and such, a tiny amount like this might be okay), maker again unknown, size: 66, weight:1087g, dimensions: 238mm x 288mm
Ohhhhh- pillage then burn...

Re: A helmet database and a request for help
Thanks Matt,
The side to side measurement tells me the size ( maker dependent ) so that's the only one needed.
Holes can be difficult to allow for but steel is about 8 gms/cm^3 so I can allow for that in your figures. Again, thanks for your data and with some more I think we may be able to have some meaningful results. I believe I will need about 30 results from each maker of each style and size ( that's 90 x 5 makers = 450 helmets ) but statistically that is the number to draw ANY meaningful conclusions.
Come on guys, join the weigh-in!
Dan
