Helmet looks ok, but the decals are definitely poor fakes.
Guessing, it is possibly worth $200/$300 or so.........

There are many WWII German militaria reference books, but sometimes
pictures with captions do not give you enough specific and detailed
information to figure out if a piece is genuine or not.

The helmet shown is an M40 beaded helmet, typically issued for secondary combat use and civic. Not for front line duty.
The decals are very poor fake SS and party decals.
As for reference books if you want SS, you want the new updated edition of SS Steel.
Ken Ns Germanys Combat Helmets 1933-1945 A Modern Study is a must.
The History of the German Steel Helmet 1916-1945 by L Baer is a must.
These 3 books are all you need. And forum access to GHW and you are set.

Also "try before you buy" in other words post what you want to buy first before dropping the coinage.

    Gents and Helmexperts,

is it right, that the Edge of the Helmet a sign for a badly helmet is? When the helmet was produced in the Fabric and he has a poor Quality, he became this Edge!
so,he can only used for "Luftschutz" and not for the "Front".

    Please your comment.......

Hi Nikolaus, you are correct. If a batch of helmets were found to have defects in the steel after balistic testing, instead of scraping them all, they were retro fitted with this band. This instantly showed they were unsuitable for frontline use, but good enough for home front civil use.

    Cheers, Ade.
